When regeneration isn’t working properly, it can lead to problems with the DPF itself as well as problems with the diesel engine. Regeneration can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to take place, making it difficult for vehicles that mostly operate in stop-and-go environments to maintain higher speeds for elongated periods of time.
However, regeneration often takes place every 300 miles or so, and it only occurs when vehicles are traveling consistently at speeds of more than 45 miles per hour. The issues are mainly associated with the DPF’s cleaning process, which is known as “regeneration.” Specifically, regeneration occurs at elevated temperatures when the soot and exhaust contaminants that are trapped in the filter are essentially burned out of it.
